ICYMI: OPHR February Office Hours Recap - Black History Month Initiatives

Every month we host OPHR Office Hours for an in-depth discussion on relevant topics for all workplaces. In February, we discussed Black History Month:

Black History Month starts on February 1st which is approaching quickly - do you know what you’re going to say? Do you know what company communications you’re going to send? Do you have meaningful initiatives planned? Did you ask your ERG or DEI Committee for input?

It’s ok if you don’t know the answer to those questions but you should have them soon! We got your back!

ICYMI - In Case You Missed It 📝

February office hours were on Feb 2nd - we had real talk about Black History Month initiatives. Common themes:

  1. Engagement early is best practice

  2. Involve everyone in the discussion, not just your Black employees

  3. Learning to move past your personal discomfort and listen

  4. How to take learnings and apply to any group we don't share an identity with

We also discussed metrics and getting buy-in throughout the organization. The following tips were shared:

  1. Measure as much as you can - even if you start simple

  2. Connect initiatives with giving back to the community you serve (ESG!)

  3. Hold executives accountable by tying DEI metrics to end of year bonuses

  4. Metrics may not move quickly but progress matters no matter how small
